North Metro moves to buy land for track

North Metro Harness Initiative plans to move one step closer to breaking ground on a $50 million harness track/card room by purchasing the 185 acres just north of Gander Mountain in Columbus Township that the facility is to be built on.

The purchase could have happened months ago after the Minnesota Racing Commission approved the plan back in January, but NMHI was hoping two separate lawsuits by the Columbus Concerned Citizens group against the MRC would have been settled before the option to buy expired.

NMHI Chief Financial Officer Tom Fox says the option originally expired August 1, but they got an extension and that is now expiring. The sale of the land should be finalized by the end of October.

The delay in starting construction because of legal delays will most likely cost NMHI more in building costs, project officials said.

The recent hurricanes may also have an affect on the price of steel that will be used in the construction of the facility.

“It really depends on what the steel prices are, whether they go up or go down. That’s the biggest single item” Fox said.

“Obviously the cost will rise because of the demand for building supplies in the Gulf Coast, but that may incent the producers to produce too much and the prices may go down. You just don’t know.”

The purchase of the land doesn’t worry the CCC though.

“There is nothing we can do about them (NMHI) buying the land,” CCC spokesperson Don Steinke said. “They’re individuals and they can purchase real estate if they want to. They’ve always said they were going to buy it so it’s no big surprise to us.”

The CCC is more concerned about its appeals in the Minnesota Court of Appeals.

One suit is an appeal of the MRC’s findings for approval of NMHI’s class A and B licenses.

The other is appealing Judge M. Michael Monahan’s decision to drop the CCC’s case that claims the MRC violated state open meeting laws.

“We’re not too worried about the appeal of Judge Monahan’s decision,” Fox said. “We’re just hoping to get on the agenda soon, then we can stay on schedule to start building in the spring.”

Crafty Sailor the story this time at Mohawk
Tuesday, June 28, 2005 - by John Manzi, for the Delvin Miller Amateur Drivers' Association
Monticello, NY --- Usually the biggest story coming out of the weekly C.K.G. Billings Amateur Driving contests concerns winning drivers, and rightly so, but the fact that the grand old campaigner Crafty Sailor was driven to his 88th career victory in a Billings division by “Congenial Gene” Miller arguably is more noteworthy this time.

On Monday evening, June 27, two Billings divisions were contested over the seven-eighths mile oval at Mohawk Racetrack in Campbellville, Ont., where both Miller and a Canadian native, “Howie the Horse” Gelfand, from Puslinch, Ont., was victorious in the other.

Miller who is currently second in points in to Dein “the Jupiter Gem” Spriggs, in both the Midwest region and in the combined points category, guided Crafty Sailor to a gate-to-wire victory in a time of 1:584 after they held-off a late charge from Tally Ho Joe, who was driven by Dave “Yes It’s True” Offenberg. Third place went to Rips Chance and driver Anthony “the Capo” Verruso.

Crafty Sailor, a 12-year-old, altered son of Sailor Boy, sometimes driven by his owner, “Wisconsin Dave” Carter of Eau Clair, Wisc., now has career statistics of 88-31-39 in 226 starts, and has earned $99,420 -- most of which was garnered in amateur races. He began racing as a 4-year-old and didn’t win a race until he was five. But over the last five years -- this one included, although it’s far from over -- Crafty Sailor has won 71 times.

Gelfand notched his first Billings victory of the year when he reined Rizzuto to a two length victory, in a swift 1:574. Gelfand shadowed Glidin Home and driver Peter “the President” Gerry until thee top of the lane, at which point Glidin Home went off-stride, which allowed Rizzuto scoot to the front -- and then coast to a two length win over I’m Back (Rob “Rapid Rail” Krivelin). Chevie Poker Chip, who was sixth at the three-quarter pole, rallied and finished third for Bob “Lumberman” Troyer.

The next action in the year-long Billings Amateur Driving Series will take place on Saturday, July 2, at the “Cradle of the Trotter,” Historic Track in Goshen, N.Y.
